Impossibility

Impossibility
is this week's theme at Illustration Friday. My work almost never deals with things that are impossible...I so deeply love the real and physical world that I rarely feel the need to go beyond its inexhaustible inspiration. Nonetheless, I am enjoying looking at other people's flights of fancy!

The tie-in with this week's IF theme is that it is an impossibility to make a dog pose for you for more than thirty seconds at a time! I had to take about 30 photos of this good-natured corgi, only one or two of which worked as painting reference. Thank heavens for digital. (The island referred to in the painting's title is, of course, Monhegan Island: how I love that place!)

Lovely portrait! He's so perky and happy-looking--and the setting is lovely too.

(my dog stays still for hours at a time--sleeping on the couch--but he's black, and that's not usually the pose I want if I'm going to draw him.)

I really like this! I suppose because it's a strong composition and that friendly dog face can't be resisted.

very nice!! I have a lot of shots of my dog- or my dogs nose up in the camera lense!!

(In response to your comment, I hope it's just the forty-something thing--you described what it's like perfectly, and that it will GO AWAY sometime in the future...)

Oh, and now I see that you're the person who painted that lovely in-the-art-museum-with-a-baby painting too. These are so fabulous!

I can't get enough of your work. It always depicts a slice in time when things are simple and quiet. We all need more of that!

I have a Corgi patient right now so I immediately thought of him when I clicked on. He'd approve of this painting!

I love animals, and your painting is gorgeous, but the evil side of me is imagining you taking photos of the dog, and a van flying around the corner of that building, narrowly missing you both, just as you are about to snap the keeper photo!

Hi Deb, just wanted to reassure you...there are no cars or trucks allowed onto Monhegan. Certain residents have pick-up trucks, but this probably brings the grand total up to ten, on the whole island. Plus the roads are rutted dirt...so there is no zooming around. It's a walker's paradise!

Wow! I want to live on your island! I can't imagine a road without speeding vehicles! Can I visit? :)

How right you are. This has a lovely feel to it, and I can almost see the tail wagging and the tongue hanging out with that last pant before he runs off on an unknown mission. Wonderful painting, and Fleeting is just fantastic.

Oh, you are just brilliant! I love the deep colors and the bright white of the corgi. He has SUCH a great personality! The island sounds heavenly. I'd love to go there someday.

Hi how are you?

I was looking through your blog, and I found it interesting, and inspiring to me, so I thought why not leave you a comment.

I too have a blog that I use out of Southern California here in San Diego.

Mostly it is a collection of artistic expression, and I have many friends with the same interests, maybe you can become my friend, and follow, and I can also follow you, if that is okay.

Well I hope to hear from you soon, and or read about you….LOL

Sincerely,
Jesse
